KERDI over Gypsum | ICC-ES Report ESR 2467

KERDI Membrane over Gypsum Wallboard

Please see below regarding gypsum as an acceptable substrate for KERDI membrane. From our standpoint as a manufacturer - gypsum is OK. The ultimate decision regarding gypsum wallboard as an acceptable substrate should be made by your local building official.

Included below is a screenshot from the Schluter®-Shower System Installation Handbook listing gypsum wallboard as an approved substrate.

The Schluter®-Shower System Installation Handbook detail K-SH-K under Requirements lists:

  • Solid backing - gypsum wallboard, cementitious backer unit, fiber-cement underlayment, fiber-reinforced water-resistant gypsum backerboard/underlayment, coated glass mat water-resistant gypsum backerboard, Portland cement mortar bed, concrete, or masonry.

The detail also lists under Solid Backing Materials:

  • Gypsum wallboard - ASTM C1396/C1396M

Gypsum wallboard panels must comply with requirements of ASTM C1396.  In addition ICC ESR-2467 includes gypsum wallboard as a suitable substrate for KERDI in section 2.0 USES. ICC ESR-2467 also references the requirements in IRC Section P2709.2 and IPC Section 417.5.2.5, these sections of code require Load Bearing, Bonded, Waterproofing Membranes that meet the requirements of ANSI A118.10. ICC ES-2467 shows that Schluter®-KERDI meets ANSI A118.10 requirements.

KERDI membrane is made out of the same plastic as 5 gallon buckets.  It is milled down to 8 mils with fleece on both sides for bonding purposes.

I would love to offer a demonstration of how the system works. I can do this in under an hour waterproofing a small shower model while explaining during the demonstration.

Please feel free to ping me with any questions, and let me know if you would like to lock in a demonstration.
