Schluter DF32 KERDI Collar | aka Spy Hat or Sombrero
The Schluter®-KERDI flashing collar is clamped into place after applying a bead of Schluter®-KERDI-FIX or equivalent sealant on the drain body. The flashing collar is bonded to the mortar bed with unmodified thin-set mortar. Weep holes in the drain are protected from clogging by rubber tile spacers or a preformed plastic weep protector. The inside surfaces of the flashing collar are buttered with unmodified thin-set mortar and dry pack mortar is used to fill in the
"bowl". Finally, a layer of KERDI is installed using unmodified thin-set mortar over the mortar bed, remaining exposed surface of the KERDI flashing collar, and the mortar packed into the
"bowl". This layer of KERDI is cut tight around the threaded drain grate to minimize water penetration into the mortar "bowl" and limit the potential for dark stone and/or grout joints due to the continued presence of moisture. It may be easier to apply multiple pieces of KERDI to accomplish this last step, as fitting a tight cut around the drain grate and covering a large area of the floor while ensuring a proper bond to the top of the flashing collar may prove difficult.
NOTE
Installers can fill the "bowl" section of the flashing collar with thin-set mortar, and use the cured mortar block as a form to help shape the mortar bed.
