KERDI-Line Tileable Grate to KERDI-Line Metal Grate?

Though it is possible to go from a KERDI-Line tileable grate to a KERDI-Line metal framed grate, it is advised to proceed with caution. 

Moving from to the tileable grate to the metal framed grate introduces the possibility of compromising (degrading) the KERDI waterproofing connection between the channel body with pre-attached KERDI and the shower floor. 

Moving from tileable grate to metal framed grate will require precision cutting of the installed tile around the channel body to accommodate the metal frame of the metal grate assembly. Reference the photo below.

Manually hand cutting floor tile to move from the tileable grate to the metal frame grate will also introduce the likelihood of chipping the surrounding tile from using a handheld cutter.

If you choose to move forward, you will need to take the frame of the metal frame grate and flip it upside down over the existing tileable grate. Use a permanent marker to mark the installed floor tile impeding on the required space needed for the frame to nest correctly into the assembly. Use a handheld cutter with a premium blade to carefully remove the tile around the channel body to accommodate the metal grate and frame.

I recommend using Schluter KERDI-Fix around the perimeter of the remaining tile assembly after the cut has been made to ensure that it is sealed from moisture accessing the interior of the assembly before using thinset to install the new metal drain frame grate.See below for an image referencing this concept. Though the image is a wall to floor transition, the concept is the same.


Please also note that choosing to do so (move from tileable to metal framed grate) would void the Schluter warranty IF THERE WERE AN ENSUING FAILURE AS A RESULT OF THE GRATE CHANGE. Please proceed with caution after all parties have consented to the change.

Reversing this concept - moving from a metal framed grate to a tileable grate - is not possible. This would leave a void from the surrounding tile and the newly installed tileable grate. Overhanging the tile on the tileable grate to meet the surrounding tile would pose a drainage issue by the overhanging tile preventing water flow from reaching the drain quickly and effectively,

KERDI-SHOWER-CB for KERDI Drain Adapter

If you are familiar with our Schluter KERDI-Drain/KERDI-Line adapters (for tying the KERDI shower system into a pre-installed two stage drain), and you want to use a Schluter Shower Tray , then you know the tray will need to be lifted so that the drain flange will nest properly onto the shower tray recess. This is because the drain body and the adapter are installed over the subfloor rising above the surface enough to inhibit proper flange nesting on the tray. The solution required the installer to source enough 1/2" backer to fully embed beneath the shower tray to lift it enough so that the flange would nest properly. DITRA-Heat in Shower | Detail & Tray Adjustments

Installing DITRA-Heat in a shower increases the floor assembly height by the thickness of the membrane used; 1/4” for DITRA-Heat membrane and 5/16” for DITRA-Heat DUO membrane. DH-SH-23 is the detail taken from the DITRA-Heat installation handbook with critical information for installing DITRA-Heat in a shower application. Photos of the detail are included below. When Using Schluter Shower Trays Remove the center break-out section of the tray that supports the drain flange, highlighted in green below.
