KERDI Membrane over Gypsum Wallboard Please see below regarding gypsum as an acceptable substrate for KERDI membrane. From our standpoint as a manufacturer - gypsum is OK. The ultimate decision regarding gypsum wallboard as an acceptable substrate should be made by your local building official. When installing Schluter products, dissimilar metals in contact anywhere in the system shall be avoided to eliminate the possibility of a galvanic (re)action or galvanic corrosion. There is no issue installing large format tile on a shower ceiling with KERDI/KERDI-Board provided the structure construction ( i.e.,  joists and wall board on the ceiling) are designed and installed to carry the load.  We state this in the Shower Handbook with the following: "When KERDI/KERDI-DS and tile are installed on the ceiling, the solid backing and fasteners must be able to support the load of the tile and setting and grouting materials." By leaving out any qualifications on the load capacity of KERDI, we are saying there is no issue with the bond of the KERDI to the solid backing, or the tile to the KERDI/KERDI-Board, provided both are installed properly. Shade & Texture Variation due to Raw Materials & Manufacturing Processes Similar to tile and stone, profiles are also affected by raw materials and manufacturing processes in that shades/finishes and textures may vary from batch to batch. There are a number of reasons why you may want to consider using the KERDI-Drain Adapter, or KDAR (KERDI Drain Adapter Ring).  (1) You want the assurance that the plumbing connection was completed by a licensed and insured plumber - peace of mind. (2) You have a shower remodel and would like to work with the existing drain connection.  No problem. A two stage drain will be secured over the surface of the subfloor (concrete or wood).  Concrete box outs may allow the drain to be nestled just below the height of the rest of the floor as you may be able to custom float to the height you want.   Wood, on the other hand, is set.  When using a Schluter TT (Thin Tray) you will need to lift the height of the tray to offset the height of the drain body and drain adapter.  This can be done with compensation boards such as 1/2” tile backers, scrap floor rated OSB, drywall or KERDI-board (easiest to work with).  I recommend KERDI-Board or cement backer when lifting...
